Spiraea japonica Pruning Video
Spiraea japonica is a great, tough little plant. It has great leaf color early in the spring, its summer leaf color and bloom are a great splash in the June garden the first year or two it’s there. Then, it seems to flop all over, goes out of bounds and you end up hating the plant. Well, hate it no more. All you need is to prune it properly. There is a pruning method called stumping where you cut the plant down to just a few inches. Not all plants can handle such drastic pruning, but Spiraea japoinica can. Watch the video to see just how it’s done. Come back an visit once a month to see how the shrubs are doing.
Burning Bush Hedge Pruning Video
Sometimes Burning Bushes need pruning to improve the health of the plant. Buring bushes grow so quickly they usually need to be sheered two or three times a season. If you simply sheer it and don’t cut holes to allow light to the inside of the shrub you end up with leaves on the outter surface of the shrub and very little branching and leaf surface on the inside of the plant. Why does it matter you ask? The shrub has an extensive root system. The leaves serve to feed the roots. So, if you have more roots than leaves you have a hungry, weekened plant. To increase the amount of leaves on the shrub watch the video. Come back once a month to see the progress.
